When the Rug is the Star!

When you think of selecting a rug for your room, don’t stop at a simple tool for keeping your feet warm. Rugs can offer splashes or color, texture and showstopping design. It can liven up a room that needs an extra touch of pizazz and give a cozy feel to any area of your home.

JCL Staging & Design loves a beautiful rug. Here’s a few key tips to making the most of your rug whether it’s on the floor or you’re feeling extra trendy by opting in for a wall piece.

TIP 1: Rugs Are Great Room Blockers

If you live in a home with an open floor plan, section off that spaciousness with a rug or two. The rug can help to section off the area of your room you want to distinguish from other areas. For example, if you have a combined dining and living room, use a nice rug to block off the area you want to use as your entertainment section and the place where you gather to break bread with loved ones. The rug doesn’t even have to be big to give the distinction of invisible room borders.

TIP 2: Centerpiece Rug

You could build your room design around a rug. Make it the inspiration piece, every design has one. If you have a favorite rug that displays your sense of style, choose your furniture and art to match. You can also use the rug to inspire the color scheme of your space. This works especially well if you have a studio apartment where your living space is one big room. That glamorous rug can literally be the focal point to build everything else around it.

TIP 3: Rugs and Shapes, Rugs and Shapes!

Don’t be a square. Rugs come in all shapes and sizes so think outside the box when making your selection. It could be square, round, oval, or rectangular. If you’re really feeling artistic, you can choose an unconventional shape. Think wavy. There really are no rules when selecting the shape of your rug. The only rule is, you have to love it. So, let your inspiration drive you.

TIP 4: Just say no! To wall-to-wall carpeting.

A room with a rug and bare floor combo gives the illusion of space. This is especially important in small areas. So, select a rug that fits just under your coffee table or in the center of the room, leaving the bare floor to shine underneath. The area will feel more spacious and inviting. It even works for your hallway rug designs. Don’t fill the entire walkway. Instead, leave the bare floor exposed to create a nice design that leaves breathing room.

TIP 5: Rug as Wall Art

Who says a rug can’t be on the wall? If its artsy design is worthy of being hung, don’t hesitate to give life to your wall. The texture gives a chic feel to any room, and there are endless possibilities with the color. You can even use your rug wall art as the color splash an otherwise mundane room design needs!
