Making the Most of Small Outdoor Spaces

Design and style know no restraints when it comes to space. Don’t let a little yard or tiny balcony scare you away from showing off your stylish edge! Color, esthetics, and placement go a long way even when the space is limited. At JCL Staging & Design, we bask in the face of tiny outdoor settings because we know that the wow factor is not lost. In fact, with small exterior areas, the fun is just getting started!

So, whether you live in the burbs or in a city skyscraper with a terrace, here are five ways you can make a big impression with your small outdoor spaces:

When designing your small terrace, think round! A round table will make the most of the limited space and still provide a nice seating area. Add an extra touch of beauty by finding a round table with a touch of class, like a tiled top, and beautiful wrought-iron legs and chairs to match. Offset the rustic table and chair design with a delicate, yet colorful plant with flowers to add a pop of color that’s pleasing to the eye and the heart. Imagine stepping out first thing in the morning to enjoy a cup of coffee or tea with a side of sunrise, or after a long hard day, relaxing on your tiny terrace with a nice glass of wine and the sunset. Take in the city views mixed with the beauty of the sun and let your imagination go wild in the comfort of your intimate exterior where fresh air is free and the sky’s the limit.

Enjoying a bit of nature doesn’t require acres of land. A tiny piece of outdoor greenery will do just fine! Survey your area to get a sense of what you can do with it to make the most of your space and your outdoor enjoyment. Maybe a cushioned outdoor loveseat and footstool is the perfect outside companion, or a simple table and chair set for an evening post-dinner dessert. Don’t be afraid to add some color with beautiful flowers and a variety of small plants and bushes. These nature-beauties don’t call for a lot of space and yet they make such a big impact in how we feel when in the enjoyment of our privacy.

Have you ever dreamed that your balcony could be an escape from reality, like your bedroom, but outside? Well dream no more because you could live it in bold bright florals and blushing blues. Add the right light and you’ve got yourself a comfort cave outdoors where you could kick your feet up, listen to music, have some wine, read a book, and even fall asleep to keep the dreams coming.

Don’t let a small porch discourage you. A bench and some potted plants can spruce it right up! Let your imagination run wild when it comes to the curbside appeal of your home’s front exterior. If you don’t have steps to place potted plants, just hang one. As for the seating options, a bench or porch swing with some personality can make for an impressive, eye-catching introduction to your home. Ever think of hanging art outside? Can we say, Frida Khalo!? There are limitless possibilities with a small porch.

What is it you want your backyard sanctuary to say about you? If you’re an avid writer then maybe a small table and set of chairs would do you just fine. But if you’re looking for an at-home escape to put your feet up and let go of the outside world, maybe a hammock is the way to go. If you really want to get fancy, add some paving stones to create a walkway or a small platform for outdoor furniture. A meditation area will do you just fine in a small backyard as well because it doesn’t take up much space but can make a huge impact on your wellbeing.
